Congratulations on having a great outing with 1051. It appears that you had a good time and made some friends along the way. I don’t necessarily like or understand the criteria for this competition. I guess it was more of a publicity type deal for their site ??? I’m surprised they even got 10 cars to compete at a $300 price tag .
1. Show competition – More like a popularity contest. How popular can a GVR4 be with only a production number of 3.000 cars
2. Build Quality – when compared to a complete engine transplant like RX7 - Not taking anything away from 1051 which is tastefully moded, however for the most part just has bolt-ons – How do they judge that 1000 points for a car like RX7 for the work involved vs 100 for GVR4 and others with bolt –ons and light fab work??
3. Gas Mileage – Really? Does anyone building a car even worry about this ??? Even if this was a concern shouldn’t it be calculated as cost per mile. E85 $2.99 per gallon vs 93 oct $4.39 per gallon ?? (NY pricing)
4. Value of car – cant figure that out at all??? Lol so basically if you buy a gvr4 put 100k into it- the cost of the mods mean nothing its just the cost of the car when new ?? take Supra, R34 or RX7 likely have 50K plus into the car – how does that factor in?
5. Ride along with Hot Model !!! What does that have to do with anything related to performance/show ? (pictures please )
6. Dyno- They even managed to alter Dyno competition – Torque curve VS Horsepower? I have seen Tuners tune for horsepower peaks on dyno for bragging rights – However if you hold an event like this – you should mandate “no tuning” during the entire event – this would prevent horsepower peak tuning for dyno since that type of tuning will hurt the car in other events.
7. Auto X – Cone Racing … dependent on how tight they made the track one can argue – the course could favor smaller cars .
The only event that they didn’t put some sort of twist on was the drag racing event !! Or did they lol??
In any event – 1051 looked great and performed as expected – I love the action shots of the car ! good job Mark!!

I understand some of your sentiments, but overall, the event really was damn fun. The money I paid to enter ($225) was less than I would have to pay to enter a drag race, a dyno session, and an autocross day separately. I also received a gift certificate to vleds worth $25 and a few new t-shirts, so that offsets the cost a tad. And some of the pics and video I end up with out of this alone might be worth the price of entry even.
I'm sure that they will have many more people entering this competition next year after people spectating saw just how much fun it was for us to be in. I really don't think it was just for publicity. I mean, sure they want their website name out there, but after meeting the guys and working with them all last weekend, I think they really wanted a fun street car competition. And this was how they did it. It was a first year event, so minor tweaks will probably be made for future events.
I was gonna wait until IM laid out the whole story, but this is how my car placed in the individual events:
5th in Drag racing: 12.002 @ 121.2 (I kept spinning off the line killing my 1-2 shift and the best 60ft I could muster was a 1.82 after four passes)
4th in Dyno peak power: 424whp/383ft-lbs (dynojet)
8th in Dyno power delivery (Yes, they used a strange method to measure this. I have a peaky torque curve that apparently hurt me in this category)
5th in Ride Quality (It is what it is, give a hot model chick a ride. She didn't have to crawl over a cage to get in and I ran the AC, so I scored better than those without it, lol)
3rd in Build Quality & Engineering (Bolt ons or not, they liked the build quality of the car. No messy wiring, no leaks, no cut up sheetmetal, etc. Methanol install was clean, wiring was clean, intercooler fab looked good, etc. Looking at the swapped FD, I noticed a lot of things I would clean up if I were the owner of the car)
3rd in Show 'n Shine (I guess a car with limited production numbers can be popular. It also helped that the overall theme of the car was constant and that it was super clean. I explained to the judges that I built the car with modern technology, but wanted it to look "period correct" as much as possible and I think I achieved that.)
3rd in Fuel Mileage @ 34mpg (In WA, prices between 92 octane and E85 are actually pretty close together. $3.50/gallon vs. $4.00/gallon roughly. The Evo was the most fuel efficient E85 car at 24mpg)
8th in Autocross (damnit!)
4th in Price (Original MSRP with inflation added - I was beat by an '04 WRX wagon in this category, haha. Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the way they scored this. I think current KBB divided by original MSRP with inflation added would be more accurate)
I'm not exactly sure where all the other competitors placed in each individual event, so I can't post that. I only know some of the details for those that placed near my car. Either way, I try not to take it super serious. It was a fun event and I enjoyed running the car the whole weekend. I'm glad you like the action shots, and I'm looking forward to see how the rest of the pics and video turned out. Thanks!
