Next issue, the power steering rack started pissing fluid everywhere shortly before the clutch decided to sh*t out. When it rains it pours.

Anyways, I figured out it's easier to just drop the entire front subframe then pull the sway bar and PS rack, so that's what happened.

New rack:

All clean, rust proofed, painted and assembled:

That was the last major task that needed to be done before installing the motor. If everything else goes smooth, I hope to have the car back together 4th of July weekend.

I like the routing of the piping as well. I did run into a small issue with the new Evo intake manifold, though. The manifold sits a bit lower, which in turn locates the TB a bit lower than it was before, so now the lower pipe is hitting the transmission mount. I'm going to have to cut a small section of the pipe out and add a coupler between the TB and the other coupler pictured. I really wish I had a welder for things like this, but another coupler will suffice for now.

Making progress here and there slowly but surely. I fixed the clearance issue with the cold side IC pipe routing, and got the rest of the system installed. Luckily, all the hard stuff is pretty much done, so it's really just a matter of bolting stuff on and plugging stuff in.

Major stuff left to-do:
-Install the Walbro 255 and rewire
-Bolt in the 5 lug front hubs and reinstall the axles
-Replace fluids in the rear diff, T-case, and trans
-Prime the motor
-Bleed/adjust the clutch
-Bolt up the T-case and exhaust

I did get the tires mounted on the new wheels. As my luck would have it, the tire shop slightly fucked up the finish on one of the wheels by initially using the wrong cone on the balancer. It's a small blemish, but still pisses me off. So, I'm stuck refinishing the wheel again (now with a tire installed), or stuck dealing with it...Guess which one I'm gonna pick /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/madfawk.gif

Lastly, crappy low light picture of the new matching MOMO shift knob. My wife picked it out, so I was a bit apprehensive at first, but it actually looks and feels really good!

I made a little more progress on the car. I started by installing new rotors for the 5 lug swap.

I also got pretty much everything under the hood buttoned up.

And put the finishing touches on the wheels.

Hopefully this thing moves under its own power here shortly.

Yep, for now. When I get off my ass and swap the tune on 1837 to SD, 820 will get the hand me down Evo 8 MAF.




I got the car running late yesterday night. After a short test drive, I figured out I had a few small issues the address. I had some boost leaks, and figured out my valve cover had a hairline crack near the cam gears which subsequently pissed oil everywhere. I also figured out the MSD plug wires I was running were junk. I was tired of working on the car at that point, but was satisfied that it was at least running.

Today, I addressed the issues I found earlier, and now the car runs awesome. I still need to dial in the tune for real power, but I need an alignment before I start doing all that sh*t. I'm also short 1 lug nut on each wheel, since the Evo 8 Enkeis use the lugs with the flat seat...Which by the way were impossible to find locally. I ended up having to order a set online, so they should be here this week along with some other goodies to round out the build.

I gave it a quick wash to knock off all the JSB dust, and then drove it around for about an hour or so. I couldn't be happier with how the car has turned out thus far...And I gotta say, It was pretty surreal having 2 empty bays in the garage again!

I buttoned up pretty much all of the outstanding issues under the hood today. I started by replacing the junk ass Ebay slim fan with the stock main puller fan, since the car would struggle to stay cool at idle with the Ebay junk. It runs nice and cool now.

Added a $3 FRAM Airhog air filter, which BTW looks better made than the K&N filter I had previously.

Also replaced the bad MSD wires with some Autolite stockers, installed some BR8EIX plugs, and swapped in a new valve cover since the old one cracked.

Then, it got a quick boost leak check @ 30 PSI until the BL tester blew off and almost killed me. I called it good /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/uhh.gif

Lastly, installed some camber plates to take care of the notorious positive camber up front from the Evo 8 suspension. Then, and added a pair of 5mm spacers in the rear to bring all 4 corners flush. New stance:

The wife and I are planning to take both turds to Annapolis Cars & Coffee tomorrow morning if I can drag my ass out of bed.

I needed some more stop to pair up with all the go I've added to 820 recently. Luckily, Nate hooked me up with a great deal on a set of Baer Track Claw big brakes. They were in great shape overall, so I didn't need to do much. I dissembled everything to clean and lube all the parts. Then, in typical fashion, I gave them a nice coat of ricer red before putting everything back together.

Installing them wasn't as straight forward as I thought it would be. With Nate's help, I figured out you have to clearance the back of the knuckle where the half moons are cut for the caliper bracket bolts. Only after the knuckles are clearanced will the Baer adapter brackets bolt in place.

Once I finally got the calipers and rotors on, I realized the brake line brackets were not going to work with the Evo suspension I'm running. I had to order some adapters for the lines up front to get everything where it should be, so the job is on hold until those come in the mail. Here are a few pics of the progress (the new rotors dwarf the old stockers).

Once the adapters for the lines come in I'll bolt them up and bleed the brakes. Then it should be good to go.

That's how you do it. Heck, I not only put the wife to work (in the winter, in the driveway), I get my little grandson out there too!! Best thing is when the volunteer. lol

Yeah, my wife is awesome. I remember way back when I picked up 820, I would joke with her that I bought the car for her. As the build progressed, I actually started including her in on some of the stuff I was doing. Eventually, I was getting her feedback on how I was building the car, and letting her help pick out parts and such. By the time the car was getting close to finished, she was really taking an interest in it.

Now, she loves the car. She drives it to work every so often (when it's not JSB). She's driven it to Cars & Coffee, and even 14 hours to the Shootout and back. She's a trooper!

I adapted a universal set of camber plates to a modified stock strut mount/top hat. I don't know of an off the shelf solution for camber plates that can be used on the Galant in conjunction with Evo 8 suspension.
