I'll add my two cents because I have experience up this alley.
I run the C53A VIN Registry at "www.4g61t.org". You can see what I have put up for public view in this link: click
Not the best with Spreadsheets, and can get by with the basics. I've collected just over ~150 cars (never really keep track that way) via VIN or anecdotal evidence of their existence/demise, of the ~1500 VIN's that were said to be imported via the Press. This includes Mitsubishi Mirage's, Dodge/Plymouth Colts to make things less predictable when building the vehicles with little evidence direct from the owner in most cases, or previous owners. I have been lucky in being able to extrapolate build dates and day codes, because if all the VIN's go in perfect succession, IE one after another, then I can add build dates and day codes for vehicle that I cannot look up directly. For now I refrain, just because I like concrete evidence and pictures of door jamb placards and firewall placards are gold. No other way to get a build date/day code for a Dodge/Plymouth currently.
It would make me smile ear to ear if your format was to work better than what I have. My spreadsheet has a full VIN and Firewall code (just a C10AKUxxxxxx identical to the VIN serial portion), just not visible in each screen shot (yeah, tedious process for posting updates), and a small write-up or mods or relevant information the owner/seller feels they want known about the car at the far right.
No idea how you guys have this catalogued, but my process is far too tedious for my liking. Simple enough to add, just no way in my small way of thinking, to add changes without wiping out how the car used to be setup.
Anyways, to start the VIN Registry into existence and with the thought process that most people had about car VIN's being visible (and that being something of an issue), I opted to allow people to give me their VIN's in confidence.
Have I considered posting VIN's?? Yes, but that would have to be put to a vote, and in all honesty, I could not contact half of the people on the site that did register, short of a mass site email to all users (who are hopefully current and their email address's were filed and working).
So, food for thought would be to have some VIN's posted for view, to allow people to build a vehicle in ASA/CAPS (if they don't have ASA), or for ordering parts, for many types of E39a's:
VIN, Build date, Day code,FACELIFT/Pre-FACELIFT, FED/CALI, Model, Color (ASA nor CAPS show this from what I know), Trim, Owner, anecdotal section. I posted some JDM VIN's for Cyborg's so people could search or order parts for them. Not everyone know about FACELIFTS and timelines, when ordering parts from overseas, so it could help to show those differences if VIN's for overseas cars get posted. There has to be enough members willing to have their VIN shown, or a decent number of cars to source parts from, so as to cover enough of the options available. Kinda of like having some JDM Chassis's and serial numbers posted in you want to source those parts, or to find the parts that are identical to your USDM model, short of that VIN being available. That is where things get kind of tricky.
Anyways, CAPS and ASA General Export, US, JDM and Europe are all available in the HOW TO AND INFO ARCHIVE SECTION, under this thread: Click Me
As I mentioned in the last line, people have to input a color, and lucky for you guys, you don't need model, build date and day codes because we get Dodge/Plymouth vehicles. I am trying to get Chrysler's EPC up and running, to allow this to happen in a better fashion. Be thankful your listing is all Mitsu! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worthy.gif
End ramble. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/applause.gif
P.S. I like what Iceman has been doing all these years to compile this information.
P.P.S. I also like the fact that others are willing to help out. Every bit counts!
