^ would be better than not installing them at all....Sure would leak a lot less.
Have the been removed? I wouldn't mess with them if they are still in. If they are out a lot of people use gasket maker around the outside before putting them in. It's made by Permatex and comes in a bottle with a brush. You can usually find it with the RTV sealant isle!
