Why a vr-4?
Because all the self indulgent weiners are driving evo's, sti's, and bmw's? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
This is quite funny because OP has an E36 M3 as a daily. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif
Ooops... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif
[confession] I've had a few pass thru my hands as well [/confession]
I've probably driven a total of 50k in 7 or 8 different m's, abusing them in all kinds of different roles.
One of the shops I used to work for would buy them blown up or otherwise damaged and put them back together to use as shop beaters untill they sold. When my z was down, I drove one for a whole summer. In addition, one of our best customers was a pilot and a hard core bmw guy. I put a lot of miles on his cars positioning them at various airports around the western U.S. He was an afficianado, so his cars always drove well, and I always looked forward to getting paid to drop one of his cars off.
Clean m3's are a rare bird, a true drivers car, have no doubt...
They kind of lean into the wind at speed, and encourage shenanigans on twisty sections.
...and they pull like a freshly fucked fox in a forest fire from ninety to well over one thirty, so if you're irresponsible ( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif ) they make a willing accomplice to felonious hi-jinks...
... but that performance comes with a pricetag many owners won't pay ...
Therefore, most of them drive like an 82 Volare with 200k showing on the clock, and aren't worth the time, effort, and money to get them sorted back out.
As a tech, I serviced a lot of different makes, and after awhile some patterns start to develop, and this is a pattern I saw over and over with many makes, including (and especially) the bmw/m series crowd.
They have enough credit to finance the car and fancy bits of kit, but they never stay up on the maintainance, so their cars are driven into the ground and end up being complete piles of sh*t.
Everybody has expensive wheels, $3k exhausts, and many high dollar bits, but the vast majority of the rest of the car, including the bushings/suspensions/brakes are usually as worn out as a two dollar whore working the northern oilfields. The oil and cooling system leaks, thin pads running on warped rotors, but mostly, bald and/or cupped tires due to alignment issues were the rule, not the exception with these cars.
Finding a clean m series is a challenge, that's for sure.
Ask VRausch, he just got one, and he'll probablly tell you the same thing.
On the topic of why to get a vr-4, the answer is simple.
It's a car that can fufill many roles.
It's a blank canvas, and can be built as a street car, a street/strip car, or for rally...
You decide what you want, and you build it yourself.
More than just "usable" in the winter, they can be down right invincible in inclement weather.
... weather that would stop all the other cars on that list ...
In the summer, they'll purr down the road at any speed that's reasonable and prudent /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif
Even stock, you won't get beat up many onramps.
Tastefully modified, not much will hang with them.
That's why a vr-4 makes sense to many of us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
