Two mystery bolt holes in my transfer case *PICS*

I just swapped my 180k miles original transfer case with one that I bought from another dsm-er.

It is a 23-spline transfer case. But the weird thing is that it has these two extra bolt holes that my original transfer case does not have.

Anybody know which transfer case do I have ? Is it a 2G t-case ?
I know it is not a switchable one, because it doesn't have the bracket shown in vfaq.
Morever, what are those bolt holes for ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi bazeng, mine looks exactly like that!

But I bought it from a guy in the states, so I doubt it is from a lancer evo..

Could this be the 1997-1999 2G AWD t-case ?

Okay, I removed the transfer case to check the gear ratio.
( I.e. whether I have 1991-1996, or 1997-1999 gear ratios )

From searching in dsmtalk, I found:
Quote:

5spd & A/T Transfer case gear ratio.

* -96 : 1.090 (drive/driven gear tooth 24/22)
* 97- : 1.074 (drive/driven gear tooth 29/27)

So, I want a 24/22 gear ratio for gvr4.

This is how I setup my transfer case to check gear ratio:

I found that if I turn the screwdriver ( output shaft ) 22 full-revolutions, the input spline ( where I have marked with a marker ) will turn 24 full-revolutions.
( Incidentally, you can also turn the screwdriver just 11 turns, and watch the input spline do 12 turns )

Okay.. so now I know that I have the correct gear ratio transfer case.
However, as it turns out I am missing one dowel that locates the transfer case to the tranny.
I guess I will have to wait until Monday and see if I can get a replacement.

I am hoping this will fix the decel noise that I have had since I bought the car.

Oh yeah, if you have coast-down or deceleration rumbling noise, it could also be due to worn transfer-case.

I have rebuilt my driveshaft with very minimal improvement on the decel noise.
With the new-ish transfer case, the noise is very much reduced.

Unfortunately, the 3-bolt LSD diff I have on the car currently has quite a bit of play on it, so a 4-bolt diff is going in next.
