I'd like to see the motor. What was the difference between the mf & ge? The ge looks basic.

One was turbo one was not, the turbo had about 100hp and not much more torque ( maybe less) IIRC....

Paul and I got on a tangent and looked into this.

there is some dsm guy that got hold of one of those motors and he's in the process of putting it in. he was getting pretty far last i checked, which was months ago. might run and drive now.

I love those silver steel wheels. When plastic hubcaps are just too fancy, get some grey painted steel wheels on your base model diesel sedan. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

those are actually made out of sheet metal. the black bumper is the only thing that was made from plastic. They changed the bumpers to so called "big" plastic bumpers after 91.
We have a lot of turbo diesels here, unfortunatly they are all beaters, its hard to find one with a decent engine.
I can post some pics later of euro galants lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

turbo diesels were 75hp only, not much torque either... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

How can a turbo and diesel not make torque? I thought that was the point of both. Huh.

yeah, but its a small engine. only 1.8litres. the initial point of the smaller diesels was that they didnt consume much at all.

Oh snap. FNG bumps an older thread!

Looking for some discussion on this subject, actually. A TDI swap for the GVR4 pops into my head more often than it probably should, but if old school muscle cars are getting Powerstrokes, making 400-500 wheel, 1000lb-ft and actually getting 30mpg or better around town, I can see merit in our considering it for our cars.

(Obviously, in order to preserve the integrity of such rare vehicles as the GVR4, it would be best to experiment on a mongrel DSM.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hsugh.gif

So, the last post in this thread before FNG, here, bumped it back up, mentions the Astron engines. Check out some basic numbers:

4D56 SOHC: 2.5L turbo diesel with 21:1CR, 128HP, 232lb-ft@2000rpm
4G63 DOHC: 2.0L turbo gas with 8.5:1CR, 210HP, 214lb-ft@3000rpm

The Astron makes about 10% more torque than the Sirius, but makes it a full 1000rpm sooner. It's a 2.5 vs. a 2.0, but assuming it would fit with a minimum of fabrication, I suspect the potential for tuning would not need to be as advanced as the current state of 4G63 affairs in order to achieve 400lbs-ft.

Just a thought. Might be interesting to do a swap on an otherwise beat-ass test mule to see what was possible. Who wants to wind out to 10,000rpm for a 1000hp dyno queen when they might be able to put the same amount of torque down on a street car that still gets 30mpg?

They did have more torque than any other "normal" gasoline version. Both the sohc 1.8 and the sohc 2.0 had less torque than the diesel did. But they where more expensive and it took longer to get your diesel, than to get your gasoline. So only few people bothered to buy one.

If you guys are interested, i've got a couple of pics from diesel 6th gens on my desktop.(i'm now on my laptop) If you want i could upload these. Also a couple of pics from the engine and such.
