I'm having an argument with a friend. He says that a 3-bolt diff uses a different housing cover thans a 4-bolt diff. I say the covers are interchangeable. Who is right?

Covers are the same. I ended up using the cover from my 3bolt AWS unit because the fill bolt would not come out of the 4 bolt cover.

However, the 4 bolt cover has a sticker that lists the gear ratio and LSD and the 3 bolt does not...

Thank you terry! Ironically, we were arguing because his talon is having the exact same problem that you described, and I still have my old 3-bolt. He didn't want to yank his cover without knowing for sure.

Except if you have a 3 bolt LSD of course.

True and neither did 4 bolts, however the question wasn't specific on platform.

His car is a factory 4-bolt 1992 talon. The cover we want to use is from my old 4WS 3-bolt.

GVR4s never came with the LSD from the factory.

USDM ones may not, but JDM ones do.
