hvac/ash tray/and cigarette lighter bulbs

I have a blown HVAC bulb. Anyone have a part number for this? I checked Sylvania's site, and they have some general information, but I don't want to assume anything.

Thanks!

I already know this is a real pain in the behind to get a part number for /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I am prepared for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

go to Rock Auto and in the catalog look under this folder: Mitsubishi - 1991 - Galant VR4 - Electrical Lamp & Bulb - Instrument Panel Light Bulb

Its the first one (type 74) and they are $0.39 a piece but you have to buy them in packs of ten and then pay shipping and all that. I have recently had some blown HVAC bulbs too. They are tiny little guys with green condoms on em. Or, you can replace them with 12V LED's from this place click

Wow, I didn't expect any response at all. It usually ends up that
way with bulbs.

Thanks for the clarification!

No problem. If you are thinking about switching to LEDs my suggestion would be to get the high power ones. The #74 incandescents that are in there do have the green condoms on them, which reduces their light output, but a single regular LED is still not as bright or as efficient because it doesn't have a 360* viewing angle. If you get an LED that's too bright you can always place a resistor in line to tone it down.

If it interests anyone, I calculated the cost of replacing all the light in the dash with LED's from the website above. All the 194 bulbs in the instrument cluster and 74's for hvac and button illumination would be able to be replaced with a wedge base equivalent that already has a resistor and diode wired in. Some lights in the switches however are smaller than the 74 bulbs and I would have replaced those with 3mm LED's and wired in the appropriate resistor for them to withstand 12VDC. In the end I think everything would have been on the order of ~$80.

The reason I wanted to do this is because like you, some of my HVAC lights were busted and I am not a huge fan of the green color. I would have made all the dash lights red with the switches going blue when on (instead of orange how they are now). I also was playing with the idea of putting RGB LED's in everything and programming a pulse wave modulation driver so I could have the dash be any color I wanted.

One thing to note is that Mitsubishi put a light green tint on the back of the displays. It can be cleaned off but it will add a slight green tint to the color. I put amber lights everywhere and the dash worked (obviously) and the HVAC controls worked too, but the lights for the slide controls came out a weird tan green color.

When I tried Blue bulbs in the dash it came out a sea green color.

Regarding that green tint. I took off the cover of the L-----R slider and attempted to get the light green tint off but the black can be scraped off too. Any suggestions for getting just the green off?

Good stuff so far! I will probably just pop the bulbs in and see what happens. I have so much other stuff going on with this car and so little time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bawling.gif

Well I went to put in the "74" bulbs last night for the 3 hvac rotary controls and they worked like a champ.

Unfortunately, one of the bulbs that goes into the ash tray cigarette lighter area (there are 3 of them) decided to blow while I was away.

I tried a 74 bulb in there and it was too large. Sylvania's site didn't help much. It specifies a 74 bulb for this location.

Any ideas what bulb this area uses? If all else fails I'll buy from the stealer but it is such a pain to explain what I am looking for over the phone
and don't want to go in person because they are far away.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Pictures would help a ton. Get a penny and put both bulbs up next to it so we get a really good idea what you're talking about. There are four or five different sizes/types of bulbs in the dash.

Forget the pricey individual LED wedge bulbs for behind the gauges. $25 or so worth of flexible LED strips and you can have DUAL color LEDs in your choice. Takes a dremel with a drill bit, a low wattage soldering iron/solder, and some 400 grit sand paper.

These strips can be used all over the place. I have the dash out of 195/2000 right now and have been scratching my head over those little, look-like-they're-hardwired-into-the-harness bulbs for the HVAC stack for days. I'll probably just buy another strip or two of the reds, cut them to size, and hardwire them in.

You could reasonably expect to replace all the dash bulbs with LEDs for under $60.

I'm trying to figure out which bulbs you are referring to when you say "look-like-they're-hardwired-into-the-harness." As far as I know, there is one bulb for each of the hvac knobs, one for the ash tray, and one for the cigarette lighter. The bulbs that illuminate the buttons on the dash (AC, foglights, etc.) have very small bulbs whos leads are woven into a rubber base.

I really like what you did with the LED strips in your instrument cluster, but how do you propose to do something similar in the hvac controls without having too much light output?
