Head bolt question.

What size allen socket is needed to remove the head bolts?

Are you sure you weren't using an allen wrench? The 10mm allen sockets are next to impossible to break.

Granted I've only pulled 5-10 cylinder heads off with mine but the one I got from Sears is still holding up. But now that I've said that I'm sure it will break the next time I use it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What????? We are talking head bolts right? They should only be torqued down to 72 ft/lbs...definitely not tool destroying specs.

I always worry about screwing up the allen head of the bolt more than breaking the socket. make sure the socket is all the way in!!! I have had a few close calls in the past

I usually break the allen insert out of the socket and have to tack weld it back in... great neck ftl /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for all the replies and advice guys. I got the allen socket on Wednesday and took the head off on Thursday without breaking anything.

The original poster said for removal, and I'll agree they can be a huge pain to remove. All that coked on oil can really glue things together.
