Any tricks to getting it off? I really don't want to remove the extension from the transmission because I have low mileage redline in the trans and I don't really have anything to collect it and reuse it. On the other side I've always just pried it off, but the drivers side is a PITA. A pry bar keeps slipping off of it and I actually hit my head on the ground pretty good.

In my experience you'll need a slide hammer or some other heavy hitter to separate the axle from the extension and I think that's best done outside of the vehicle.

Sometimes they are just stubburn. I would say either you get a nice clean drain pan, and catch it, or jack the driverside of the car up, and let the pass side stay on the ground. That way, it dosen't want to run out as much. once you pull the axle out, put a rag in the seal to keep it in as much as possible.

If you do want to drain the oil, just use an empty washerfluid bottle that is dry, and drain some of it out. Then if you feel the need to filter it to put it back in, get a cone paint filter, and strain it. They work excellent. I use them for re-useing antifeeze and trans fluid if they are still good. I actually will use 2 at the same time for the antifreeze.

Well, I wanted to get just the half shaft out without the whole extension from the trans. I know it comes apart, cause I put new boots on it about 5 years ago. It's frozen now. I removed the whole thing from the trans and lost some fluid. I'm spilling fluid all day long.

can has milk jug & paint strainer?
yea good synthetic fluid is too pricey and too special order, it merits catching in special cases.
