bad wheel bearing?

I'm getting a grinding/howling noise from the Galant at freeway speeds usually 60-65+ is when it gets loud. sounds like its only the left front. but from what I have seen and heard in the past is that when wheel bearings go bad there is play in the wheel. I have no noticeable play in the wheel/hub at all.

I have never actually replaced a wheel bearing before, would like to make sure before I tackle this project.

The bearing can fail without any play in it. Lack of grease, or contaminates can make there way in and cause pitting which gets noisy. Also keep in mind that cupped tires can and will sound the same as a bad bearing too.

Also extended sitting without moving( years) will cause small grooves in the races and will make them noisy too.

yeah. should have swapped the tires around. didn't think about that till later. but they are all balding at the same rate. didn't notice any odd wear.

yeah. she did sit for probably ~5 years I'm told with a blown motor...

I drove 1392 from Bellvue, WA to Ogden, UT with a bad wheel bearing (when I first bought my car). Worst experience of my life /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif Pepboys ended up saving my butt (only shop open on a Sunday)
And continued to drive it for another 1300 miles to St. Louis with no problems /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I drove a 92 Civic like 40+miles with a wobbly ass rear wheel bearing. was horrible. we where scared.

so I guess I'll give this a try this weekend.

do these bearings require to be greesed when installing? watching video on YouTube of guy doing 5lug on colt and he was putting greese in them? all the Honda ones are sealed.

Not sure what you're talking about, The fronts on a Galant aren't sealed and need to be greased after being pressed in. Rears are sealed though

Yup, Canada is right. The fronts are definitely not sealed.

The first thing I do with new front bearings right out of the box is disassemble and repack them with a good synthetic wheel bearing grease. If you are installing them right out of the box, you're doing it wrong, IMO. Every bearing I've disassembled out of the box was far shy of the amount of grease I thought was adequate. Not to mention, I'm not sure exactly what grease they are packed with from the factory.

It takes 5 minutes to disassemble the bearing and repack it. Easy insurance if you ask me.

Among other things, this was discussed in depth in this thread: click

If its not the brakes its the wheel bearing. I you have one of those temp lasers you can see whats getting hot.

you know, i was thinking it sounded like something with the brakes rubbing. but the pads are fine and i didnt notice any distinctive marks on the front side of the rotor.
all 4 corners of my brakes have good depth, but make a slight noise that split second before stop, and little when backing up. and there is no abnormal pull left/right under braking. there is a slight pull to the left when going straight, but im sure the car could use an alignment (in the works, once i replace the front rack, coilovers, and tires)

i do not have a laser temp sensor.

I would definitely advise ruling out tires first. I have three times in my life suspected wheel bearings and turned out to be worn tires. Specifically once on the rear of the VR4. Changed the bearing even for that one, but it turned out to be a noisy tire.
