any reason not to disable abs?

If I pulled the main 60A fusible link, disconnected the computer in the trunk and unplugged the lawnmower engine, is there any reason I should not drive the car around like that? Brakes will still function as expected (minus abs), correct? Any quirks or weird issues in doing this?

I ask becuase I need to get a GVR4 road worthy. It needs tires BAD. I have a good set on my other GVR4, but to use them would need to swap my non-abs 5-lug parts over. I don't want to half ass it, but I need a driveable car monday (would correctly complete abs delete later on down the road).

I'm sure I could find this searching, but am busy working on #777 and would just like a confirmation on this (whether I should, or should not.)

Thanks!

No reason. Everything will work fine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I never understood ABS removal. I have always thought of ABS as a good thing when stopping. Sure there are probably people out there who are better at panic stopping without ABS. I am not one of them. Are you?

If you are trying to simplify things and lose weight then I understand, but I would rather lose weight and simplify other areas of the vehicle than delete my ABS.

Now if it is in bad shape and money/time is tight, I would guess that is another matter. Not judging you, I am just telling you my thoughts on the subject since you posted on it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Come to think of it, I feel the same about A/C removal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I try to get as many MPG on my 91 Escort GT as I can and even have an account on gassavers.org. I don't mind going with a longer 5th gear, swapping the MAS, or swapping the injectors. I don't mind going 60 mph in the right lane of the highway either. I won't get rid of my A/C though although everyone says that I am wuss because I won't drive 2.5 hours + to work on the highway with my windows up and A/C off when the meat thermomemter in the center vent reads 180 degrees. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Alot of that comes down to personal preference and I respect that.

Be safe and take care of yourself because no one will do it for you! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hsugh.gif

On most cars I'm sure that is true, but the abs on these cars is not good, at least so I hear I have never really experienced it myself.

@blkchr91: many people have had issues with the ABS in these cars kicking in when it shouldn't, almost causing them to crash. It is widely accepted that the ABS in the Galant is sub-standard and its a good idea to eliminate it. Of course a properly functioning advanced ABS system is going to stop a car better than any skilled driver in the appropriate conditions. The problem is when it kicks in at the wrong time.

I eliminated my ABS because it would go off randomly with hard braking and wasn't constant enough to adjust too in extreme conditions. What I mean by this is it wasn't safe because you could never tell when it would go off so at that point its become dead wait and a handicap when driving hard.

For the record I have A/C /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have had one too many bad experiances with my abs, thats why it had to be deleted. If I would go over 70 mph on dry, stable hard road like a highway, The abs would kick my foot back as soon as I tried to brake. Fortunetly the first time it did it to me I was going 80 on a mountain road and coming to a turn I had to be going atleast under 45 to make, Luckily I managed to downshift and got a pedal before the turn. but I was then determined to get rid of the entire abs system. plus who wants that big fugly thing under their hood anyways? Just sharing my experiance incase you dont know if your system is actually working properly. I'm sure theirs a reason mine didnt work, But being the self controlled driving type, I wanted it gone. Its all in personal opinion.

It also shaves 18lbs out of the left front fender when you remove it completely. Mine was already disabled when I bought the car, I just need to physically pull it all out and install the prop valve/lines.

The ABS has scared the hell out of me in the snow by hyper engaging at the slightest bit of wheel slip on a normal stop. Lift off the brake and re-apply to only have it do it again. Having the pedal turn to a rock and stop braking when your are trying to stop for traffic sitting at a red light,or approaching a stop sign going downhill will get your attention quick!

I plugged the pocket logger cable in to disable the ABS on my '92 (only works on '92) and pulled the fuse on my '91 when I drove in the snow.

I'll eventually shitcan the ABS in my '91 if I put it on a minor diet-but I agree about AC,I'm getting too old to go with out that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rofl.gif

Wth you mean to tell me I have been driving around all this time with no ABS who designed the logger this way? Wtf no wonder my sh*t would
lock up when I applied the brakes in the snow. Note to self unplug logger when driving in snow good to know learn something new everyday.

The logger needs to put the car in diagnostic mode. This disables ABS.

Guess I shouldnt drive around with the logger plugged in then since my abs works fine.....

I had my ABS disabled in my 4/1000 for some time now due to a 5 Lug swap. However, I got all the sensor I need and will be installing this and a full A/C system back in when I have the time.
